Week 2: My Humble Abode

Bedroom

Chambre à coucher (my bedroom)

Visualize this: a small two-story building on a street corner, painted an unique shade of yellow-orange (well, more yellow than orange) … a stairway leading to the second floor leans against the structure. On another adjoining side, a large wooden balcony with a spiral (yes, spiral) staircase sinks and disappears behind wood fences. A family dentist occupies the first floor, according to the sign by the door. An apartment-home occupies the entire second floor. Welcome to my home.

A SCAD friend I “met” over the Internet had been graciously helping me find a place to live prior my moving to Savannah. She and I would look to see what roommate advertisements were being proclaimed in the Savannah newspaper, www.georgiaguardian.com or the Savannah internet-based newspaper, www.savannahnow.com. She also scouted through the halls of the SCAD buildings and the dorms to see what was posted. I honestly cannot remember how I came about finding my new home.

As the story goes, I was to replace a girl moving out of the apartment, occupying one of the three bedrooms and sharing one of the two bathrooms with two other female roommates. My trusty SCAD apartment-seeker said that she had driven by the place and practically exclaimed “Eureka!” and so the lease was signed and the place was mine (well, technically speaking, partially mine).

Let’s see…my bedroom is in one corner of the apartment with light tan carpeting and two bi-fold closets; the walls painted white but with a million thumbtack-sized holes which I happily spackled. Since my tiny Nissan Sentra had room for so much, it was just a bed, desk, and an office chair I needed for furniture. That pretty much covers it for my bedroom. Now, moving on to the rest of the apartment…

The apartment, other than three bedrooms and two baths, and a large balcony, there is a large (HUGE) kitchen and living room. The living room and hallways have a polished wooden floor while the kitchen and baths have tile or linoleum. Everything else is carpeted. Nice, huh?

I can’t really say much about my roommates because I’m still relatively new and don’t know them that well. Amy graduated from SCAD with an undergraduate degree in interior design. She has the master bedroom and her dog lives with her. Fester is a 14-year-old canine of an unknown breed. Bethany’s still a SCAD student, undecided about her major (either photography or graphic design…maybe both). She plans to move in Amy’s bedroom when Amy moves out (as soon as the lease ends in May…Bethany and I are thinking of renewing and just staying here).
